The “Guardians of the Gerês Mountains” project addresses the critical lack of river monitoring in the Peneda-Gerês National Park, where less than 10% of rivers are constantly observed, hindering pollution and water quality interventions. The solution involves deploying smart buoys to close this data gap and fostering community involvement to ensure the preservation of the rivers. The project, supported by key institutions like the University of Minho, aims to make Gerês a model for integrating technology and environmental sustainability.
